Ingredients
Scale
2 cups masa harina
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup sweet filling (such as chocolate, fruit, or nuts)
Banana leaves or corn husks for wrapping
Instructions
In a large bowl, beat the vegetable shortening and sugar until fluffy.
Add the masa harina, baking powder, and cinnamon, mixing well.
Gradually add the milk and vanilla extract, stirring until a smooth dough forms.
Soak the corn husks in warm water for about 30 minutes to soften.
Take a corn husk, spread a portion of the dough on it, and add a spoonful of your chosen sweet filling.
Fold the husk over the filling and tie it with a strip of husk or string.
Place the tamales upright in a steamer and steam for about 1 hour or until the masa is firm.
Let them cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Ensure the corn husks are well-soaked to prevent tearing.
Experiment with different fillings for variety.
Serve with a drizzle of syrup or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for extra sweetness.
